Catalans Dragons confirm Tony Gigot departure

Catalans Dragons have confirmed the death of France global Tony Gigot.
Even the or stand-off is out of contract and, after denying the offer to become a player for 2020, the deal was taken off the table after club chairman Bernard Guasch lost his patience.
The Perpignan club say Gigot will continue his career at a different club and that’s thought to be at the NRL, where he had a spell early in his career.
Gigot, that also had a brief stint with London Broncos five decades back, scored 44 attempts and 298 points in 130 Super League appearances in two spells because of the Dragons and won the Lance Todd Trophy as man of the match within their Challenge Cup triumph over Warrington at Wembley in 2018.
Catalans coach Steve McNamara said:”Tony will go down in history as the first French player to acquire the Lance Todd Trophy because of his performance from the Challenge Cup final.
“His performance in that match has motivated countless young French players to pursue his dream and follow in his footsteps.”
Gigot is among four players leaving the club .
Former Australia Greg Bird declared his decision to hang up his boots at mid-season while winger Jodie Broughton has signed Halifax and back-row forward Kenny Edwards has agreed a move.
Edwards, Broughton and gigot will all miss Friday match but the 35-year-old Bird will create the final appearance of his career.
“Greg retires from the sport having made Perpignan his next home from Australia,” McNamara said.
“He left a promise in 2009 to go back to the club and also remained true to this promise. He’s made a contribution to soccer champions during his career on both sides of earth.
“I would sincerely like to thank all four players to their participation to the Catalans Dragons. It’s been a terrific joy to use all of them and I want them all the finest in their future careers.”
Bird is in discussions with the club about joining the coaching team.
