The lack of diversity in soccer organisations is a part of the issue in tackling racism, ” says senior Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany.
While searching for Inter Milan after Belgium compatriot Romelu Lukaku was abused by Cagliari fans kompany made the point.
Lukaku stated the game is”going backwards” in the aftermath of the abuse.
“Romelu is a victim of something disgraceful not only in football, but also in society,” said Kompany.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, the Anderlecht manager added:”It goes back to who’s predicted to make a decision on those issues, and it is in these organisations that the problems lie.
“The actual racism is in the fact that none of these institutions have agents that may really understand what Romelu is moving through.
“You are working with a bunch of people and decision makers who are telling him how he should think and feel about this when you have no decision makers who are remotely in touch with what he has experienced in his life.
“That’s the real issue, if you go via the planks at Uefa or even Fifa, the Olympic League or even the English League, there is a real absence of diversity.
“In case you do not have diversity in places of power like boardrooms you then can’t have the right choices concerning sanctions – it’s a simple as this.”
Lukaku, who moved from Manchester United to Inter in the summer, has been subjected to monkey chants because he scored a penalty in a 2-1 success because of his side’s winner.
A group of Inter Milan fans claim Cagliari supporters were showing Lukaku a form of”respect” and the the abuse was gamesmanship.
