Steve Clarke says Scotland need win over ‘big boys’ to get fans believing again

Steve Clarke states Scotland should defeat one of global football’s’big boys’ when they are supposed to make fans believe in them.
The Scotland facet of clarke are in European Championship Qualifying Group I ahead of their double-header from Russia on Belgium and Friday having won two and lost two of their four games.
Victory over Russia at Hampden Park will take them level on nine points using quarter-finalists along with the 2018 World Cup hosts – albeit on a much inferior goal-difference – could help re-energise Scotland fans.
“We need a win. As a nation, it’s been a very long time since we flipped over among the so-called big boys,” Scotland boss Clarke said before Friday’s match – live on Sky Sports.
“Russia, was at the previous eight of their past World Cup, are one of the big teams.
“It is all time that we as a nation, instead of being on the receiving end, are the group dishing out a result that is regarded as an upset.
“Hopefully Friday night may be the case.”
Scotland haven’t qualified for a significant tournament as the 1998 World Cup in France and Clarke understands the correlation between a perceived apathy and that among a number of the country’s supporters.
Clarke added:”Within a number of years, people haven’t managed to reach a major finals.
“If you do not reach a significant finals, the more often it occurs, the less people start to believe in it.
“One big result can change the whole mindset of not only the squad but the entire country and hopefully it happens very soon.”
With Belgium top of the group with highest points, a conclusion could be Scotland’s best chance of qualifying for Euro 2020, however, Clarke was keen to stress that their attention should not just be about Friday’s match.
“Instead of put the pressure on a single match, I believe you need to consider the subsequent few matches to make sure we are still at the group after these 3 matches,” said Clarke.
“Whether it is Friday, Monday or even the off game against Russia [about October 10], we have to pick up some things and we know of that.”
